Helping Us To Help You

Since announcing plans to bring fibre to the Great Thornton Street Estate in Hull, we’ve been inundated with emails asking us to do the same elsewhere in the city and across the country too.

If you want us to bring service to your community, and if you can prove there is sufficient demand, then we will work to bring it to you.

What do I have to do?

You will need to show us that people in your community are interested in next-gen access so that we can direct resources to areas where there is likely to be a good take up.

How do I do it?

To start with you should talk to your neighbours to ensure that they are as interested in getting next generation broadband services as you are. Assuming that this is true, you need to get your neighbours to tell us that they are interested so that we can establish whether or not there are enough people in your area to warrant service.

We have created an email address for people to register their interest. Send your email to nextgenus@fibrestream.co.uk

We need to know: (you can copy and paste these questions into your email if you like):

  • Your full name
  • Your full address
  • Telephone number (if you have one)
  • Email address (if you have one)
  • Are you a pensioner?
  • Do you have children of school age?
  • Details of any businesses in your community which might benefit from fast broadband
  • Any information about what has been tried so far e.g. is there a local activist group who are already working together to lobby BT/KCOM etc?

The question about pensioners and children relates to both groups of people being of interest to the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department of Health, which could help get the network happening sooner too.

If your neighbours don’t have access to email, then please ask them to call 01482 778 554 and leave a voice message with their details. Alternatively, you could always print off the questions above and ask them to write the answers down on paper. You can then either email your neighbours responses to us, or send the paper responses to our mailing address on the contact page.

If you do decide to take up the role in your local area as ‘community champion’ for next-gen access then please let us know in your email to us. We’ll note you down as a point of contact and make sure that we keep you in the loop.

What next?

We are sorry, but we do not have the time to reply back to each individual email making an expression of interest as soon as we receive it. Please be assured though that your email is making a difference! Each expression of interest in an area shows us where the demand is, is mapped and recorded and is exceptionally useful to us.

We will collate the requests received and look for trends in particular areas. When an area looks promising we will begin investigating the costs and technical requirements for delivering service and get in touch with you to let you know more.

If you are interested in getting a budgetary idea of what it might cost to Fibre to the Home (FttH) your local area then this Analysis Tool may be of interest to you.

Do please let us know how you get on. You can share your experiences of promoting NGA in your locality using the comments function on this page along with any suggestions you have for others promoting NGA too.  And finally, good luck, we look forward to speaking to you soon!

I’ll be looking at HU3 Postcode along Anlaby Road in West Hull…

    Hi Chris G,

As of this moment we haven’t had anyone from HU3 (Anlaby Rd) sign up. You should be pretty safe campaigning in that area.

The map system is a good idea, but sometimes people will sign up to register interest without us having a good idea about whether or not they are actually campaigning as such.

If you get a minute could you drop us an email so we can stick your details in our database please? ;-)

    Thanks

How about bringing fibre optics to us in Skidby and other outlying areas. Although it is a relatively small village due to our distance from the nearest exchange upload and download speeds are much reduced due to distances from the nearest exchange, 5KM+ away.

Infact due to todays news of Karoo’s actions with regard to cutting off people, guilty or not, I feel as I am sure many people who use Karoo would like the choice of broadband providers and stop this obvious monopoly by Karoo.

Ask the people of Hull what they would prefer, Fibre Optics or Karoo Broadband, I think you know what the answer would be.

    Hi Kip,

Thanks for your feedback – it’s worth noting that FibreStream’s definition of Next Gen Access is 100Mbps symmetric ie twice what Virgin Media is currently offering for download and 25 times current upload speed.

When assessing the value of any telecomms service it is important to factor in all the costs eg in the case of DSL products the phone line rental is payable, even if no voice calls are made using the line itself.

Also the market is developing rapidly and prices are falling all the time eg see http://www.itproportal.com/network/news/article/2009/7/15/virgin-media-reduce-price-50mbps-broadband-28/#ixzz0LLPfNGQ6&D

It’s great to see people pushing the idea but please ensure you register interest at nextgenus@fibrestream.co.uk too because we don’t always have the time to visit the various facebook groups, online maps etc that people are building (and we would hate to miss out an area that is interested but that we don’t know about).

This sounds great, although I’m not in Hull, I do feel for the folks there who only have the choice of one provider, it would be good to give them a bit more choice.

Do you have any estimates of how many subscribers you would need to make this worth while?

One area that could be worth looking at is Marsh Barton in Exeter, Devon. It’s a busy industrial estate however the nearest BT exchange is a small exchange a few miles away so if companies on the estate can’t afford dedicated leased lines they are stuck with around 1Mbit to 3MBit broadband and LLU isn’t an option.

I’ve posted a link to this page on my local LUG mailing list which covers Devon & Cornwall. There are a few of us who can’t get a decent broadband connection (long lines, no LLU services) who may be interested.

There is a fair bit of info on the Internet about Canadian community broadband networks however that looks pretty positive. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=community+broadband+canada – Perhaps doing it yourself as a community could be a way forward if the incumbent is letting you down ;-)

Family also in the media business so speed and power are important as I’m sure it would be to many businesses, school’s, uni’s ect..
I hope you have the currage to run with this and roll out across the full city as I’m sure once people realised all the advantages like digital tv, music, media and video calling, they will see it’s great value for money and ditch our poor excuse for a provider!
